(Sports Network) - Some late success on an otherwise horrid 10-game road trip has the Colorado Rockies thinking positive. The team tries to get its homestand off on the right foot tonight in the opener of a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at Coors Field.
The Rockies dropped the first eight tests of their recent swing, extending their overall road losing streak to a franchise-record 13 games. However, Colorado posted a shutout win over Los Angeles on Tuesday before winning the series with a 2-1 victory Wednesday.
It was Colorado's first road series win since mid-April and also only the team's fourth win in its last 23 tests away from home. Not that the Rockies have been better at home, where they are 12-14 this year. The club plays its next six at Coors Field starting tonight.
In Wednesday's win, Jeff Baker hit a two-run homer to account for the Colorado offense, while Aaron Cook (8-3) scattered six hits and a run over eight frames in addition to fanning six.
Todd Helton, meanwhile, reached base on an infield single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Helton is batting .400 (14-for-35) over the streak with two homers and seven RBI.
Despite being 16 games under .500 and 10 games off the lead in the National League West, the Rockies also showed some fight in their series with LA, as catcher Yorvit Torrealba and Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp exchanged shoves in Tuesday's game. Unfortunately for Torrealba, he was suspended for three games for his actions, but would be available for tonight's game if he appeals.
Colorado will also have to contend with red-hot Brewers hurler Ben Sheets, who came very close to his third complete game of the season last time out. The right-hander held Houston to a run and seven hits over 8 2/3 innings on Saturday. That outing came just two days after he went the distance in a win over Pittsburgh.
Sheets, who has given up just four runs in his last three starts, is 6-1 with a 2.71 earned run average this year and a perfect 4-0 in seven road starts. However, he is a mere 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA in three career outings at Coors Field, having allowed 19 runs in 19 1/3 innings there.
Helton has had success in his career versus Sheets, going 7-for-21 (.333) with three homers and five RBI.
Despite taking a line drive off his left knee in his last start, Ubaldo Jimenez starts for Colorado. The right-hander hasn't won since his second outing of the season, going 0-5 in 10 starts since. He lost to the Cubs on Sunday -- his second straight setback -- after allowing four runs (3 earned) on seven hits over five innings of work.
Jimenez, who is 1-6 with a 5.37 ERA on the year but 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in four home starts, has never faced the Brewers before.
He'll contend with a Brewers club that put up 10 runs in a victory over Arizona on Wednesday. Milwaukee scored four runs in the third inning before a five-run fourth that put the game away.
Corey Hart hit a three-run, two-out homer in the fourth frame, followed by Russell Branyan's solo shot. Gabe Kapler added a season-high four hits, including a two-run double, while scoring twice, for Milwaukee.
The 32-year-old Branyan has homered in three straight games that he has played in and has four long balls in eight games since being recalled from the minors.
Colorado won all three of its matchups at home against the Brewers last season on the way to taking four of six in the season series.
