(Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins are not having the type of road trip they had anticipated, as they resume a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves this evening at Turner Field.
Florida entered its current swing against NL East opponents on a three-game winning streak and on top of the division, but then lost two of three games against both the Mets and Phillies before suffering a 7-5 setback in 10 innings at Atlanta on Monday. Marlins reliever Logan Kensing surrendered a two-run homer to Yunel Escobar in the 10th inning to keep the woes going.
Marlins starter Scott Olsen tossed six innings of three-run ball, yielding four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Jeremy Hermida and Luis Gonzalez both finished with two hits and an RBI for the Marlins, who are 1 1/2 games behind Philadelphia for the top spot in the NL East, and 13-13 away from South Beach this season.
Marlins rookie Burke Badenhop gets the nod this evening, and he is 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in nine games (seven starts) this season. Badenhop is 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA over his last three starts. He made a relief showing in a 12-3 loss to Philadelphia on May 30, yielding one run and a hit over 1 1/3 innings of work.
The right-handed Bowling Green product suffered a loss at Atlanta on April 24 after he was reached for six runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-4 defeat.
Atlanta ended a three-game losing streak with last night's dramatic victory in the opener of a seven-game homestand. Escobar was the hero with his game- winning homer in the 10th inning and finished with three hits and three RBI for the Braves, who are a solid 23-7 as the host this season.
Mark Teixeira homered and drove in a pair of runs, while Jeff Francoeur also went deep in the win. Will Ohman got the win in relief and starter Jo-Jo Reyes permitted three runs in six innings of work. John Smoltz was activated from the disabled list before the game and gave up two runs on three hits in the ninth inning to allow Florida to even the score.
The Braves will also host Philadelphia for three games and sit 3 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the division standings.
Atlanta will send Jorge Campillo to the hill on Tuesday. Campillo is 2-0 with a 0.60 earned run average over his last three outings following a May 29 start at Milwaukee's Miller Park.
Campillo held the Brewers to one run and four hits in five frames of an 8-1 victory. The effort bumped his 2008 record to 2-0 with a 0.99 ERA in 16 games, three of which have been starts.
The righty is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two career relief appearances (5 IP) against the Marlins -- both this season.
Florida and Atlanta have split six meetings so far this season, but the Braves are 34-27 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign. Atlanta is 20-10 versus the Marlins at Turner Field over that stretch.
