Colorado Rockies (20-35) at Chicago Cubs (34-21), 1:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - It's been a rough first two months of the season for the Colorado Rockies. On Friday, the team may have reached its low point.

The 2007 National League champions will attempt to shake off a discouraging loss to the heavy-hitting Chicago Cubs when the two clubs continue a four-game series this afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Colorado appeared poised to snap a four-game losing streak yesterday afternoon, but instead blew an early eight-run lead and were handed a 10-9 defeat by the NL Central-leading Cubs.

Chicago closed the gap to 9-4 on sixth-inning homers by Kosuke Fukudome and Jim Edmonds, then erupted for six runs in the seventh to forge ahead. Edmonds delivered a two-RBI double to bring the Cubs within a run and Mark DeRosa followed with a go-ahead two-run homer to complete the unlikely comeback.

Henry Blanco also blasted a two-run homer in the seventh for Chicago, which has won six straight and nine of its last 10 games at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are an outstanding 24-8 at home this season.

Colorado, on the other hand, has dropped 15 of its last 17 on the road and is a woeful 8-21 in visiting parks. The Rockies, who also led in the seventh inning of Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Cubs, are 0-5 thus far on a 10-game trek.

Manny Corpas (0-3) served up DeRosa's go-ahead blast and was charged with three runs allowed while failing to record an out after relieving starter Aaron Cook, who was tagged for seven runs on 10 hits over the first 6 1/3 innings.

Todd Helton smacked a three-run homer in the first inning for the Rockies, while Jeff Baker had a team-record four doubles in four at-bats and drove in a run. Chris Iannetta and Omar Quintanilla each finished with two hits and two RBI in a losing cause.

Cubs starter Ted Lilly lasted just three innings and surrendered seven runs -- four earned -- on eight hits.

Chicago figures to receive a stronger showing on the mound this afternoon from Ryan Dempster, who has yet to lose at Wrigley Field this season.

The Cubs have won all seven of Dempster's home starts this season, with the converted reliever getting credit for the victory in six of those tests. He's also recorded a 2.84 earned run average at Wrigley Field so far this year and allowed just one home run in his 44 1/3 innings of work at home.

Dempster kept that outstanding run going on Monday, when the right-hander surrendered one run and scattered seven hits over seven frames to defeat Los Angeles.

The 31-year-old has been quite good on the road as well, as evidenced by his overall ERA of 2.56 that ranks fourth among NL hurlers at the moment. Dempster has limited enemy hitters to a league-low .189 average at the plate as well.

He has had some rough outings against the Rockies in the past, however. In 14 career appearances (7 starts) versus Colorado, Dempster has pitched to a 7.06 ERA to go along with a 3-3 record.

Former Cub Glendon Rusch will make his first start with the Rockies today. The veteran southpaw is taking the rotation spot of Jorge De La Rosa, who has been shifted to the bullpen following a string of poor performances.

Rusch began this season with San Diego and went 1-2 with a 6.41 ERA in 12 relief appearances before being outrighted to Triple A earlier this month. He refused the assignment and was granted free agency, then signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on May 16.

The 33-year-old made two starts for Triple-A Colorado Springs and yielded just one run and five hits over a combined 11 innings.

Rusch, who pitched three seasons for the Cubs from 2004-06, owns a 7-3 record with a 4.48 ERA in 13 lifetime games (9 starts) against his ex-team.

Chicago has won three of its four 2008 meetings with the Rockies, as well as nine of the last 12 encounters between the teams. Colorado has lost six straight times in the Windy City over that span.
