(Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs will try to stay perfect on their seven- game homestand, as they welcome the Colorado Rockies tonight for the first of four straight games at Wrigley Field.
Chicago opened the homestand with a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers and recorded a 2-1 victory in Wednesday's series finale. Alfonso Soriano stroked a base hit off of Dodgers reliever Chan Ho Park to score Mike Fontenot, who reached base with a double. Soriano ended with two hits and Geovany Soto knocked in other run for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who swept Los Angeles at home for the first time since May 2001.
Starter Carlos Zambrano was once again his dominating self. Now unbeaten in nine straight starts, the righty walked four and struck out three in eight innings of one-run ball in a no-decision. Bob Howry picked up the win with a scoreless extra inning.
The Cubs, who are 22-8 as the host this season and 1 1/2 games ahead of the Cardinals in the Central, will send Jason Marquis to the mound on Thursday. Marquis is 2-3 with a 4.97 ERA over nine trips to the mound in 2008, but did not factor in the outcome of a 5-4 loss at Pittsburgh on May 24. He allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Marquis, a right-hander, squared off with Colorado on April 24 this season at Coors Field. He recorded a no-decision after giving up a pair of runs and eight hits through seven innings of a 4-2 setback. In 12 career games, 10 of which have been starts, against the Rockies, Marquis is 5-3 with a 3.89 ERA.
Colorado has been struggling lately and was just swept in three games by the Philadelphia Phillies to open a 10-game road trip. It suffered its eighth straight setback as the visitor following Wednesday's 6-1 defeat in the series finale at Citizens Bank Park.
Colorado starter Greg Reynolds got knocked around for six runs on five hits and eight walks through 5 2/3 innings in only his fourth career start. Todd Helton drove in the lone run for Colorado, which was outscored 33-10 in the three-game series in South Philly. The Rockies are 8-19 as the guest this season and 10 games off the lead in the NL West. They will also visit Los Angeles for three games at Chavez Ravine from June 2-4.
Rockies starter Jeff Francis will try to bounce back from a poor outing when he takes the ball this evening. Francis is only 1-5 with a 6.18 ERA in 10 starts this season and went back to his losing ways on Saturday versus New York. He was reached for six runs and seven hits in six innings of a 9-2 loss. Francis earned his first win of 2008 on May 18 against Minnesota with 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball during a 6-2 triumph.
The left-hander, who had 17 wins last season, is 0-0 with a 9.58 earned run average in four career appearances against the Cubs. Francis previously faced the Cubs on June 25 of last season at Wrigley Field, yielding six runs and 10 hits in five innings for a no-decision. Chicago won the game, 10-9.
Colorado and Chicago split a pair of meetings from April 23-24 this season at Coors Field. The Rockies have won three of the last four matchups in this series.
