(Sports Network) - It didn't take long for the New York Yankees to fall back into last place in the American League East. The reeling club will try to get back into the win column tonight, when they play the second portion of a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
New York ripped off a five-game winning streak, including a sweep of the Seattle Mariners over the weekend, and coupled with a five-game slide by Baltimore that began with a loss to the Yankees, moved a half-game ahead of the Orioles for fourth in the division standings heading into yesterday's opener.
However, Baltimore's Nick Markakis made sure he moved his club back up the standings, posting three hits in a 6-1 victory over New York.
Markakis hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to break a scoreless game, then after Melvin Mora singled home a run in the next frame, he followed up with a run-scoring single of his own. Aubrey Huff capped the five-run seventh inning for the Orioles with a three-run homer, with all five runs coming with two outs.
Garrett Olson (4-1) was brilliant over seven shutout innings of work in earning the win, allowing only three hits while striking out seven.
Chad Moeller accounted for the Yankees' lone run with an RBI single, while Hideki Matsui went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored in the loss.
New York starter Darrell Rasner (3-1) was the hard-luck loser, giving up one run on five hits over six effective innings.
However, with Joba Chamberlain no longer a full-time reliever, LaTroy Hawkins came on in the seventh with the score 1-0 and was charged with three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Jose Veras gave up the final two runs in 1 1/3 frames of work.
The Yankees are trying to stretch out Chamberlain's outings to get him ready for a starting role, and aim to get him into Wednesday's series finale and have the exciting righty throw about 50-55 pitches, depending on how the game itself plays out.
Though still winless on the season, New York's Ian Kennedy made big strides in his last start and will try to duplicate that tonight against the team he faced in that outing.
A no-decision against Detroit on May 1 in which Kennedy allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings was the last straw for the rookie, as New York sent the right- hander packing to the minors. He returned to the big league club on May 15 and took a loss after allowing five runs in five innings versus Tampa Bay.
However, Kennedy toed the rubber on Thursday versus the Orioles and gave up just one run on four hits over six innings, though he also walked four. He left the game with the score even at 1-1 and the Yankees went on to win in the ninth, earning Kennedy a no-decision while keeping him 0-3 on the year with a 7.27 earned run average.
Kennedy faced Baltimore for the first time in his career on April 19 and got a loss after yielding four runs on five hits and five walks over just 2 2/3 innings.
Brian Burres pitches for the Orioles tonight and has rebounded from a three- start losing streak to post a pair of solid outings, though he has just one win in that span. He had a 4.50 ERA over his skid, but rebounded to beat Washington on May 17 behind 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball.
He then faced the Yankees and Kennedy on Thursday, also getting a no-decision after yielding just a run and six hits over 7 2/3 innings. The left-hander beat Kennedy and the Yanks on April 19 behind 5 2/3 shutout innings and is 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA in nine games (5 starts) lifetime against New York.
Burres is 4-4 with a 3.16 ERA overall for the year.
Alex Rodriguez is 1-for-6 against Burres this year and 3-for-14 (.214) lifetime with four strikeouts. Bobby Abreu, meanwhile, is hitless in 10 career at-bats against the lefty, though he does have an RBI.
Derek Jeter, Abreu and Rodriguez, the Yankees' 2-3-4 hitters, combined to go 0-for-9 with three walks yesterday.
The Orioles have won four of seven against the Yankees this season after the clubs split their 18 meetings a year ago.
