(Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays will try and complete their first- ever four-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals this afternoon at the Rogers Centre.
Toronto got another outstanding pitching performance on Sunday, as Dustin McGowan gave up just one run over seven innings in Toronto's 3-1 win. Shannon Stewart finished with two hits and knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, helping the Blue Jays win their fourth straight game and sixth in eight tries.
McGowan (3-4) followed up brilliant complete-game performances from Roy Halladay and Jesse Litsch, allowing seven hits and fanning seven without walking a batter. B.J. Ryan pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the season.
David DeJesus accounted for the lone run for Kansas City, which has dropped seven straight and eight of its last nine. The Royals have been outscored 16-2 thus far in this series.
Gil Meche (3-7) pitched six solid innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out five and walking a pair.
Hoping to continue Toronto's strong run of starting pitching this afternoon will be right-hander Shaun Marcum, who is winless in his last two starts. Marcum was dealt the loss on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as he gave up four runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings, dropping him to 4-3, while raising his earned run average to 2.80.
Marcum lost to the Royals back on April 26 and is 2-1 lifetime against them with a 1.05 ERA in six games, three of which have been starts.
Kansas City will counter with veteran Brett Tomko, who is 2-5 on the year with a miserable 5.76 ERA. Tomko lost for the fifth time in his last six decisions on Wednesday against Boston, as he surrendered five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Tomko has never started against the Jays, but has gone 2-0 against them with a 6.08 ERA in six appearances out of the bullpen.
Kansas City took two of three from the Jays earlier in the year at Kauffman Stadium.
