Boston Red Sox (31-22) at Seattle Mariners (18-33), 10:10 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox have had all sorts of trouble winning on the road lately. The Seattle Mariners, on the other hand, can't seem to get a victory no matter where they play.

These two teams, both currently mired in losing streaks, will start up a three-game series tonight at Safeco Field.

After winning all seven tests during a recent homestand, the Red Sox were brought back down to earth by the Oakland Athletics over the weekend. The A's swept a three-game set from the defending world champions, culminating with Sunday's 6-3 victory at McAfee Coliseum.

Jack Hannahan delivered a two-RBI single and Jack Cust added a two-run homer for Oakland, while Athletics starter Joe Blanton (3-6) allowed three runs through the first six innings to earn the win.

In his first start since no-hitting Kansas City on May 19, Boston's Jon Lester (3-3) was touched for four runs (3 earned) on seven hits in his five-inning stint.

Manny Ramirez led the Red Sox offensively by going 3-for-4 with a two-run single, while David Ortiz delivered a solo homer in defeat.

Boston has now lost seven straight road games and fell to a disappointing 10-17 as the visitor with Sunday's loss. Conversely, the Sox are a major league-best 21-5 at Fenway Park and have won 10 in a row on their home grounds.

The Red Sox have also struggled at Safeco Field in recent years, as the club is just 4-11 in Seattle since the start of the 2005 campaign.

Seattle presently sports the worst overall record in the majors at 18-33 and has dropped six consecutive contests. The reeling Mariners are a woeful 5-18 so far in May.

The Mariners appeared to be on their way to ending their skid in Sunday's matchup at New York, but the Yankees rallied for four eighth-inning runs to come through with a 6-5 triumph and a sweep of a three-game series.

Seattle closer J.J. Putz (1-2) was charged with the final two runs the Yankees scored in the eighth and blew his third save of the year. The 2007 All-Star gave up two hits, including Jose Molina's go-ahead RBI double, and also committed a throwing error which enabled another run to score.

Jarrod Washburn pitched a solid six innings for the Mariners, with the veteran left-hander limiting New York to two runs and four hits to put his team in position to win.

Ichiro Suzuki and Jose Vidro each went 2-for-5 with two RBI for Seattle, with Suzuki belting a solo home run in the top of the third inning.

The Mariners will attempt to reverse their fortunes behind phenom Felix Hernandez, who will be making his first start since May 18. The young right- hander was initially slated to pitch on Saturday, but had his turn pushed back a couple of days due to a sore right calf.

Hernandez is currently saddled with a six-start winless streak in which he has received four losses and two no-decisions, and is just 2-4 on the season despite having pitched to a solid 3.34 earned run average. The Mariners have mustered just eight runs over the course of Hernandez's last five mound trips.

The 22-year-old allowed just two runs over six innings in his last outing, but did not factor in the decision in Seattle's 3-2 victory over San Diego.

Hernandez has fared quite well against the Red Sox over the course of his career, however. The native Venezuelan has faced Boston three times previously and gone 2-0 with a 2.91 ERA in those games.

He'll be opposed tonight by veteran Bartolo Colon, who made a successful return to the majors in Boston's 6-3 win over Kansas City this past Wednesday.

Colon, a former American League Cy Young winner with the Angels who signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox this past offseason, threw five innings in his Boston debut and allowed just two runs on six hits to record the victory.

The 35-year-old had gone 2-0 with an outstanding 0.64 ERA in three starts for Triple-A Pawtucket prior to his callup, while missing some time earlier in the year due to a strained oblique muscle.

Colon will be pitching in a venue where he has enjoyed tremendous success over the course of his 12-year career. In 10 lifetime starts at Safeco Field, he has racked up a stellar 8-1 record and a 2.17 ERA and has won his six straight decisions in the Emerald City.

The veteran right-hander is 12-10 with a 4.40 ERA in 26 overall career starts against the Mariners.

Seattle won five of nine 2007 meetings with the Red Sox, including four of the six tilts played at Safeco Field.
