(Sports Network) - The New York Mets hope to close a disappointing road trip in winning fashion this afternoon when the play the rubber match of their three- game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
After winning the first two games of the trip against the Yankees, the Mets lost the next five games of the trek, before breaking through on Saturday with a much-needed win. Nick Evans, called up from Double-A Binghamton to aid the ailing Mets outfield, went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs batted in, and scored in his major league debut, leading New York to a 9-2 victory.
Marlon Anderson went to the disabled list on Saturday with a strained hamstring, and with Moises Alou and Angel Pagan already on the DL, and Ryan Church recovering from a concussion, the Mets called up Evans late Friday night. He made the most of his debut, hitting the first of three doubles in New York's five-run first as the Mets put a stop to their season-long slide.
Claudio Vargas (1-2) came out on three days' rest and gave the Mets just what they needed, scattering four hits and two runs over seven innings, with three strikeouts and a walk. Carlos Beltran had a bases-clearing double, and David Wright and Carlos Delgado homered for New York.
Jeff Francis (1-5) held the Mets to one run in his final five innings, but the five he surrendered in the first did him in. Francis gave up six runs on seven hits total, with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Matt Holliday homered for the second game in a row for the Rockies, who managed only four hits, and lost for the third time in four games.
Getting the call for the Mets today will be right-hander John Maine, who had his four-start winning streak stopped in his last trip to the hill. On Tuesday against Atlanta Maine surrendered four runs and eight hits in four innings, dropping him to 5-3 on the season, while raising his earned run average to 3.29.
Maine defeated the Rockies the only other time he faced them, giving up just one earned run and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings.
Colorado will counter with veteran Aaron Cook, who is 6-3 with a 3.06 ERA. Cook lost his second straight start on Tuesday against San Francisco, as he allowed four runs and 10 hits in seven innings.
Cook is 2-0 lifetime against the Mets with a 2.45 ERA in six games, four of which have been starts.
Colorado defeated the Mets four of the six times it played them last season and New York has dropped five of six at Coors Field.
