(Sports Network) - Johan Santana will try to keep his recent unbeaten streak intact this evening, when he leads the embattled New York Mets in the finale of a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.
Santana is 4-0 with a 3.43 earned run average over his last six starts, and defeated the New York Yankees in the Bronx on Saturday. Santana held the cross-town rival Yankees to four runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings of a 7-4 victory at legendary Yankee Stadium.
The left-hander, who is 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA in six road starts this season, improved to 5-2 with a 3.30 earned run average in nine outings. Santana lost to Atlanta on April 6 this season at Turner Field, allowing just a run and seven hits in seven frames of a 3-1 loss. Santana is 0-2 with a 2.41 ERA in three career starts against the Braves.
New York manager Willie Randolph has been feeling the pressure from both the media and fans, and hopes Santana can erase a three-game losing streak tonight. The Mets entered this series fresh off a Subway Series sweep over the New York Yankees in a rain-shortened set in the Bronx, then dropped both games of a doubleheader against Atlanta on Tuesday before losing last night's contest by an 11-4 margin.
David Wright and Carlos Beltran each had two hits and an RBI for the Mets, who have been outscored 23-7 so far in the current set. Starter Mike Pelfrey continued his recent struggle on the mound, allowing eight hits and six runs in four-plus innings of work. Pelfrey has now lost five straight starts and is winless over the past six trips to the hill.
The Mets are 3 1/2 games off the lead in the NL East standings.
Atlanta has won four in a row and five of six games, including Wednesday's seven-run bashing of the rival Mets. Jeff Francoeur went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, while Chipper Jones recorded the 398th homer of his career, but left with a bruised right shin after being hit by a pitch from New York reliever Scott Schoeneweis in the seventh inning.
Brian McCann had three hits, two RBI and scored three times for the Braves, who got three hits and three RBI from Mark Teixeira. Atlanta is now 19-5 at Turner Field this season. Jair Jurrjens allowed five hits and two runs -- one earned -- over seven innings for the win to keep the Braves tied with Philadelphia at 1 1/2 games behind Florida for the division lead.
Tim Hudson gets the nod for Atlanta this evening and will try to get back on the winning track. Hudson had a personal three-game winning streak stopped the last time out in Saturday's 5-4 loss versus Oakland, allowing five runs and five hits in five innings.
Hudson has faced the Mets twice this season and is 1-1 with an even 7.00 earned run average. He faced them on April 5 at Turner Field and came out victorious after yielding three runs in six frames of an 11-5 triumph. Hudson then squared off with New York at Shea Stadium on April 26, surrendering four runs and seven hits in just three innings during a 4-3 setback.
The right-hander, who is 6-3 with a 3.06 ERA in 10 starts this season, owns an 8-5 mark with a 3.96 earned run average through 14 career appearances against the Mets. Hudson is also 4-1 with a 2.94 earned run average in five road tilts.
Atlanta leads the season series against New York by a 5-2 count, with a 5-0 record in Dixie.
In rather tragic news from Turner Field, a 25-year old baseball fan died following a fall from the upper deck, according to WSB Radio in Atlanta. Justin Hayes of Cumming, Georgia fell from the upper deck concourse to the field level concourse behind home plate during the eighth inning of Wednesday's contest. Hayes was rushed to nearby Grady Hospital after the fall, where he was pronounced dead.
