St. Louis Cardinals (27-21) at San Diego Padres (17-30), 10:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres shoot for just their fourth series win of the season when they wrap up a three-game set this evening versus the St. Louis Cardinals at Petco Park.

San Diego won three of four games versus Houston to start the season, then took two of three contests against Los Angeles from April 11-13. It later won two games during a three-game run with Colorado from May 9-11. The Padres are lined up for another series victory after ending a three-game slide with Tuesday's 3-2 victory.

Kevin Kouzmanoff belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Padres some breathing room and Bryan Corey picked up the win after shutting out St. Louis for two frames in relief. Starter Greg Maddux didn't factor in the decision, but was effective in five innings on the mound, giving up two runs on five hits and one walk.

Kouzmanoff and Khalil Greene each finished with two hits for the Padres, who are 1-1 on a 10-game homestand versus St. Louis, Cincinnati and Washington.

San Diego will hand the pitching duties over to Chris Young on Wednesday, and he has won back-to-back starts and owns a 3-1 record and 4.70 ERA in his previous four outings.

Young started the brief streak with six innings of one-run ball on May 11 in a win versus Colorado, then allowed four runs in six frames during a victory at Seattle on May 16.

The lanky right-hander will try for his first win against St. Louis, as he is 0-2 with a 2.95 earned run average in three career starts.

Cardinals starter Joel Pineiro was saddled with the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings of work. The right-hander came into the game 3-0 with a 3.21 ERA in five career appearances against the Padres.

Troy Glaus scored, knocked in a run and finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Yadier Molina also recorded a pair of hits for St. Louis, which had its three- game winning streak come to an end. The Cards are 1-1 on a six-game road swing through San Diego and Los Angeles.

Braden Looper gets the nod for the Cardinals on Wednesday trying to stop a personal two-game losing streak. Looper is also 2-3 in his previous six trips to the mound.

In a May 16 outing versus Tampa Bay, Looper was reached for three runs and 10 hits in six innings of a 3-1 setback. Before that, he yielded four runs and seven hits in six innings during a 5-3 loss at MIlwaukee.

The converted reliever will make his 30th career appearance against San Diego, as he owns a 3-3 mark, two saves and a 2.58 earned run average through 29 games (two starts) in the series.

St. Louis and San Diego are meeting for the first time since the Cardinals took four of seven meetings from the Padres a year ago.
