(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox shoot for their seventh straight win this evening when they continue their three-game series with the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field.
Chicago stayed hot in the opener of this set on Monday, as Carlos Quentin and Jim Thome each belted a solo home run, and Jose Contreras was strong for six- plus innings, lifting the White Sox to a 4-1 win.
Contreras (5-3) allowed a run on four hits for the White Sox, who are in the midst of their longest winning streak since reeling off a nine-game run from June 15 - August 24, 2006. Four pitchers combined to throw three perfect innings in relief, with Bobby Jenks finishing it off for his 11th save.
Pablo Ozuna came off the bench and went 2-for-2 with a run knocked in after Joe Crede was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes. Jermaine Dye and Alexei Ramirez both collected a pair of hits.
Grady Sizemore drove in the lone run for the Indians, losers in four straight. They haven't lost five straight since July 14-18, 2006.
C.C. Sabathia (3-6) took the loss despite seven excellent innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits while fanning eight. Jensen Lewis allowed two runs in an inning of relief.
Chicago will hand the ball this evening to right-hander Javier Vazquez, who is 4-3 with a 3.53 ERA. Vazquez received a no-decision on Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as he surrendered three runs (two earned) and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 4-3 win.
Vazquez lost to the Indians earlier in the year and is 5-4 against them in 12 starts with a 4.08 ERA.
Cleveland will counter with veteran righty Paul Byrd, who is coming off his best outing of the season. Byrd, though, hasn't pitched since last Tuesday against Oakland, when the Athletics managed just five hits over 7 1/3 scoreless frames to run Byrd's record to 2-3 on the year, while lowering his ERA to 3.61.
Byrd is 8-2 lifetime against the White Sox with a 4.22 ERA in 13 starts.
These teams have split their four matchups this season, but Cleveland is 24-17 in the series since the start of the 2006 campaign. The Tribe also won six of nine in Chicago last season.
