(Sports Network) - The Phillies didn't have much luck the first time they faced Tim Redding this year. The Washington Nationals hope for similar results when they begin a three-game series tonight against Philadelphia at Nationals Park.
Redding faced the Phillies on April 2 and limited them to just a hit and three walks over seven shutout innings to pick up his first win of the season. The big bats of Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley combined to go 0-for-10 against Redding in that game, with Pedro Feliz getting the lone hit off of him.
The right-hander was almost as good last time out for Washington. In that road start against the Mets on Wednesday, Redding improved to 5-3 by holding New York to a run on two hits and two walks over six innings, lowering his earned run average to 3.55. The only blemish was a Brian Schneider home run in the fifth inning.
The Nationals battled through some rain on Sunday to post a 2-1 win over Baltimore and avoid getting swept in the Beltway Series. John Lannan (4-4) scattered four hits and allowed one run, fanning five and walking one over 7 1/3 innings. Jon Rauch tossed the scoreless ninth for his 10th save.
Cristian Guzman went 2-for-3 and hit a solo homer for the Nationals, who had won three of four from the Mets before coming to Baltimore.
The Phillies will hope Brett Myers can get on track tonight. Myers has a 7.62 ERA over his last five outings -- going 0-3 in that span -- and has yielded six earned runs in three of those contests.
He lost his second straight start on Wednesday, allowing eight runs (6 earned) on nine hits in just 4 1/3 innings versus Atlanta while falling to 2-4 on the season with a 5.91 ERA. Myers allowed three homers in that contest and has yielded 15 long balls in nine starts.
The right-hander faced the Nationals at home on March 31 and got a no-decision in the only game this year he hasn't allowed a home run. Myers gave up four runs (3 earned) on five hits in five innings of his team's eventual 11-6 setback.
Myers is 7-7 with four saves and a 4.91 ERA in 27 lifetime outings versus the Nats, 17 of those starts. This will be his first appearance at new Nationals Park.
The Phillies also struggled through rain on Sunday, but unlike the Nats came out on the losing end. Philadelphia jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the first inning versus Toronto thanks to a two-run homer by Howard, and added another run in the fourth after a rain delay, but the Blue Jays plated the next six runs on the way to a 6-5 victory.
A solo homer by Burrell in the ninth pulled the Phillies to within one with two outs, but pinch-hitter Eric Bruntlett later struck out to end the game with a runner on second.
Kyle Kendrick got the start for the Phillies, but pitched only one scoreless inning prior to the first rain delay. Right-hander Chad Durbin took over when play resumed and surrendered three runs on two hits over four innings.
He was followed by Rudy Seanez (2-3), who took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in one inning of work.
The Nationals won two of three games at Philadelphia earlier in the season, but lost 12 of 18 against the club last year.
