(Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds will try to extend their season-high winning streak to seven games tonight, when they open a seven-game road trip with the first of three straight contests against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine.
Cincinnati will also visit the San Diego Padres for four games at Petco Park and is 7-14 as the visitor this season. The Reds kept their winning streak intact with Sunday's 6-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians that completed a sweep of a three-game interleague series at Progressive Field.
Adam Dunn continued his torrid pace at the plate by homering for the fourth straight game, while Cincinnati starter Edinson Volquez pitched six solid innings to win his third consecutive decision and hand Cleveland hurler Cliff Lee his first loss of the 2008 campaign. Volquez surrendered two runs on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Joey Votto also homered for the Reds and Brandon Phillips drove in a pair of runs as Cincinnati swept the Indians for the first time since interleague play began in 1997.
Bronson Arroyo will try to keep the Reds in the win column when he toes the rubber tonight. Arroyo is 2-4 with a 6.08 ERA in nine starts this season, but is 2-1 over the past four trips to the mound.
In his most recent performance on Wednesday versus the Florida Marlins at Great American Ballpark, Arroyo did not factor in the Reds' 7-6 triumph despite pitching seven shutout innings of five-hit ball. Four days prior to that outing, Arroyo tossed eight innings and gave up just one run in a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
The long-haired right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.48 earned run average through six career appearances (5 starts) against Los Angeles.
The Dodgers will begin a six-game homestand this evening, with three games versus both Cincinnati and St. Louis. Los Angeles is 11-9 as the host this season and sits second in the NL West standings at 5 1/2 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Los Angeles has dropped two of three and seven of its last 10 games, including a 10-2 decision to the LA Angels of Anaheim in Sunday's finale of a three-game interleague set at Angel Stadium. Jeff Kent drove in both runs for the Dodgers and Russell Martin was 2-for-4 with a run scored in defeat.
Derek Lowe got the start for the Dodgers on three days rest, taking Brad Penny's spot in the rotation after Penny experienced stiffness in his right arm following his last bullpen session. Lowe surrendered seven runs on 10 hits in five innings in his opportunity during the Freeway Series.
Penny is expected to handle pitching duties on Monday, and he is 5-4 with a 5.09 ERA in nine starts in 2008. Penny has lost two consecutive starts since a personal four-game winning streak, suffering the setback against Milwaukee Tuesday at Miller Park. Penny was reached for five runs and nine hits in six innings of a 5-3 decision.
In a 12-1 loss versus the New York Mets in LA on May 7, Penny yielded 10 runs and 10 hits through 4 2/3 frames.
The bulky right-hander defeated Cincinnati on April 21 at Great American Ballpark, hurling six innings of one-run ball to improve to 7-2 lifetime with a 3.00 ERA over 11 career starts against the Reds.
The 2008 season series between the Dodgers and Reds is tied at a game apiece, with the Dodgers sporting a 15-6 mark over the past 21 matchups. Los Angeles is 8-2 against Cincinnati at Chavez Ravine over that time.
