(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox will try to match their season-high winning streak this afternoon when they conclude their three-game interleague series with the struggling San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.
After winning the final two tests of a three-game series with the Angels, the White Sox have posted two straight wins over the Giants to leave them one shy of the five-game winning run Chicago enjoyed on April 3-7. The Pale Hose's back-to-back wins over San Francisco also has them poised for their first three-game sweep of the Giants in club history, though this is only the second all-time meeting between the teams.
The clubs clashed for the first time during the 2003 season, with the Giants taking two of three in the Windy City.
Mark Buehrle won the battle of struggling southpaws on Saturday, as he pitched into the seventh inning of a 3-1 victory. Buehrle (2-5) allowed seven hits and a run to snap a five-decision losing streak. Bobby Jenks threw the ninth inning for his 10th save.
Jermaine Dye had three hits and scored once for the White Sox, who won for the seventh time in 10 games despite leaving 14 men on base and improved to 6-3 on a 10-game road trip. Toby Hall also had three hits in the victory.
Meanwhile, Barry Zito (0-8) was charged with eight hits and two runs, walking a season-high six and striking out four, to become the first Giants starter to lose his first eight decisions since Jesse Burkett in 1890. Zito is the first Giants pitcher to drop his opening eight decisions since reliever Rod Beck went 0-9 in 1996 and the lefty has also lost six straight interleague decisions.
Jose Castillo had a pair of hits and scored a run for the Giants, losers of four in a row and 10 of the last 13. Randy Winn did have a hit to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. He is batting .367 (18-for-49) in that stretch.
The Giants are 3-6 on their current 10-game homestand.
Matt Cain goes for back-to-back wins for the first time this year for the Giants. Cain improved to 2-3 with a 4.17 earned run average after Tuesday's outing against the Astros that saw him yield two runs on seven hits and four walks over eight innings of a victory. The right-hander also struck out five, giving him 18 punch outs over his last three outings.
Cain has never faced the White Sox before, but the 23-year-old did loss all four of his interleague starts in 2007.
John Danks will try to improve on his 3-3 mark and 2.74 ERA when he goes for the White Sox this afternoon. Danks worked in and out of trouble against the Angels on Tuesday, allowing seven runs and two walks over 6 1/3 innings without a run allowed in a no-decision. The left-hander hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his last six starts since giving up seven in 2 1/3 frames in a loss to the Twins on April 9.
The 23-year-old Danks will be facing the Giants for the first time in his career and went 0-1 in three interleague starts last year.
