(Sports Network) - Both the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks were thought to be serious playoff contenders heading into this season. Only one of those teams has lived up to expectations so far in 2008.
The reeling Tigers will enter Chase Field tonight for the first of three straight meetings with the Diamondbacks, who put the majors' best record on the line in the opener.
Detroit has amassed an extremely disappointing 16-25 mark on the season and comes in having lost four straight games. The last three setbacks came at the hands of the lowly Kansas City Royals, who completed a sweep of the Tigers with Thursday's 8-4 victory at Kauffman Stadium.
Kenny Rogers (3-4) lasted just four innings for Detroit, with the veteran lefty getting tagged for seven runs on 11 hits in a forgettable outing.
Magglio Ordonez led the Tigers offensively with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Matt Joyce added a solo homer in the loss and knocked in two runs on the afternoon.
Detroit has now lost 10 of its last 12 games and figures to face another challenge tonight in the form of Arizona's Dan Haren. The former Oakland All- Star has been very strong so far in his first year as a Diamondback, having compiled a 4-2 record and a 3.04 earned run average through eight starts.
Haren is winless (0-1) over his last two mound trips, however, and was handed a tough-luck loss at Chicago's Wrigley Field last Friday. The standout right- hander limited the Cubs to two runs on five hits through seven innings but wound up on the short end of a 3-1 decision.
The 27-year-old is no stranger to the Tigers, who have fared well in previous matchups with Haren. He is just 1-4 with a 5.12 ERA in six regular-season starts against Detroit, and also had a no decision versus the Tigers during the 2006 American League Championship Series after allowing three runs in five innings.
The struggling Jeremy Bonderman gets the call for Detroit in tonight's opener and hopes to end a personal two-start losing streak. The once-promising hurler threw a season-low four innings against the Yankees this past Saturday and was reached for five runs and six hits in a 5-2 Tigers' loss. Bonderman also issued four walks in that game before being lifted.
The 25-year-old was only marginally better in his previous start, a 6-3 home loss to Boston on May 5. Bonderman allowed four runs on seven hits, two of which were home runs, through six innings in that game.
Bonderman will be searching for his first career victory against Arizona. He's faced the Diamondbacks four times previously and gone 0-2 with an ugly 8.14 ERA over that stretch. In his lone appearance at Chase Field, the right-hander was rocked for eight runs and nine hits in just two innings during a loss on June 26. 2005.
Arizona is fresh off a three-game home sweep of division-rival Colorado, which culminated with last night's 8-5 triumph. Brandon Webb became the first nine- game winner in the majors and his teammates pounded out 13 hits to help the right-hander get there.
Webb (9-0) shut the Rockies out over the first six innings and yielded three runs total on six hits before being removed with one out in the eighth. The sinker specialist also struck out eight and set down 15 of the first 16 hitters he faced.
Stephen Drew went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to key Arizona's offensive outburst. Chris Snyder belted a three-run homer in the win, while Orlando Hudson ended 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Diamondbacks are 11-7 all-time against the Tigers, including a 6-3 mark at Chase Field. In Detroit's most recent visit to Phoenix, Arizona took two of three clashes between June 24-26, 2005.
