(Sports Network) - Shaun Marcum tries to follow up a stellar outing in his last trip to the hill when the Toronto Blue Jays resume their three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at Rogers Centre.
Marcum ended a two-game slide on Friday against Chicago, as he surrendered just two hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings to improve to 3-2 on the year, while lowering his earned run average to 2.70.
The 26-year-old right-hander has faced the Rays just twice (one start) in his young career and is 1-0 against them, while not giving up a run in 8 1/3 of those innings.
Tampa Bay will counter with right-hander Matt Garza, who is 1-0 with a 6.16 ERA. Garza picked up his first win of the season on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles, who managed just two runs and three hits in six innings.
Garza lost his only other start to the Jays and was pounded for seven runs and eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
In the opener of this set on Tuesday, Akinori Iwamura went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in and one run scored, as Tampa Bay eked out a 5-4 win. Eric Hinske had a double and a solo home run, while B.J. Upton had two hits and drove in a run for the Rays, who ended their three-game skid.
Andy Sonnanstine (5-1) went six innings and gave up four runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and one walk, but still got the win. Dan Wheeler threw two innings and gave up just one walk, and Troy Percival got his seventh save of the year as he threw a perfect ninth.
Lyle Overbay went 2-for-2 with two RBI for Toronto, which saw its five-game winning streak halted. Vernon Wells and Gregg Zaun both collected a pair of hits in defeat.
A.J. Burnett (3-3) got the loss after he was touched for five runs on nine hits in six frames on the hill. Burnett did fan 10 batters and only walk one.
To make matters worse for the Jays, David Eckstein was removed from the game after the fourth inning due to an aggravated right groin strain.
John McDonald was sent in to replace Eckstein, but as he was running for a ground ball hit by Gabe Gross in the sixth inning, he went down clutching his right ankle and had to be carted off the field.
Marco Scutaro became the third shortstop on the Blue Jays' lineup card.
Tampa swept a three-game set from the Jays from April 22-24 and has won five straight and seven of nine in the series.
