(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have won the first two tests of their three-game series with the host Kansas City Royals, but the current American League West leaders figure to face a tougher challenge when the teams square off again tonight at Kauffman Stadium.
The Angels will take their swings this evening against Kansas City standout Zack Greinke. The young right-hander has put together a tremendous early- season performance, as evidenced by his 3-1 record and a 1.47 earned run average that trails only Cleveland's Cliff Lee for tops among AL hurlers.
Greinke does enter the game on a three-start winless streak, however. He was a hard-luck loser at Texas this past Thursday, despite limiting the Rangers to two runs and four hits and fanning a season-high nine batters in seven innings of work.
The 24-year-old also has never beaten the Angels over the course of his career. In three previous appearances, including two starts, against Anaheim, Greinke is 0-2 and surrendered a whopping 11 runs and 23 hits over a combined 11 2/3 innings.
His mound opponent tonight will be fellow youngster Jered Weaver, who will be out to avenge a tough loss to the Royals in Anaheim last month. In that game, the 25-year-old was touched for three runs (two earned) and 10 hits through six innings and came out on the short end of a 3-2 decision on April 16.
Weaver was also hit with a loss in his previous time out, when he allowed four runs in seven innings of work against Baltimore on Friday. He did record six strikeouts and held the Orioles to six hits in that game, however.
The lanky right-hander is 2-3 in five career starts against the Royals, although Weaver has pitched to a strong 1.93 ERA in those tilts.
Anaheim posted its fourth consecutive victory with Tuesday's 5-3 downing of the Royals, with Garret Anderson knocking in all five Anaheim runs with a 3- for-5 effort at the plate.
Anderson, who homered in Monday's 4-0 win over Kansas City, belted a three-run homer and added a pair of RBI singles in last night's triumph. The veteran outfielder is now 4-for-8 with seven RBI in the series.
Darren Oliver (2-1) was credited with the win after tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of rookie Nick Adenhart, who was lifted after allowing three runs and issuing five walks over the first 4 1/3 frames. Francisco Rodriguez notched his major-league leading 14th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Miguel Olivo finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Kansas City, which has dropped four of its last six. Brian Bannister (3-4) lost his fourth consecutive start after being tagged for five runs and 13 hits before exiting after 6 2/3 innings.
Anaheim is now 17-4 at Kauffman Stadium since the start of the 2003 campaign. However, the Royals have taken six of the last nine overall meetings between these teams.
