(Sports Network) - One thing that has been constant this year for the St. Louis Cardinals is Albert Pujols getting on base. The slugger will try to reach base safely for a 34th straight game tonight, when his club continues a four-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Pujols doubled in the ninth inning of Monday's 6-5 win and scored the go-ahead run from second on Rick Ankiel's groundout. Pujols, who also drove in a run in the game, has reached base in all 33 of St. Louis' games this year and has a hit in five straight and 14 of his last 15 games. He leads the Cards with a .355 batting average.
Yadier Molina recorded three hits and a run scored, while Adam Kennedy tripled and drove in a run in St. Louis' fifth win in six games. Starter Joel Pineiro was hit hard for eight hits and four runs -- three earned -- in three innings, but did manage a two-run double.
Ubaldo Jimenez struggled in his five-inning start for Colorado, surrendering four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits while fanning four and walking three. Brian Fuentes (0-2) was saddled with the loss for his ninth-inning performance.
Brad Hawpe homered, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs, while Chris Iannetta tallied three hits for the Rockies, who have won just twice in their last 10 games.
Colorado has a team 4.83 earned run average this season -- 15th in the National League -- and tonight's starter Mark Redman has done little to help that number. Redman last started on April 26 and allowed 10 first-inning runs in a loss to the Dodgers. He still ended up going six innings and didn't allow another run after the first, but the damage had already been done in an 11-3 loss. The lefty yielded seven hits and five walks as well.
Redman then pitched in relief on Friday, throwing 1 2/3 perfect frames to lower his ERA to 6.99 to go along with a 2-2 record. He didn't factor into the decision in the outing.
The veteran is 1-3 with a 7.50 ERA in six career starts versus the Cardinals. Redman hasn't faced St. Louis since 2006.
Pujols is hitting .455 (5-for-11) with a homer and three RBI against Redman, while Molina has five hits in nine at-bats with a pair of homers and four RBI versus the southpaw.
Braden Looper will toe the rubber for St. Louis tonight. Looper is 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA through six starts and has been near flawless this season. The right- hander has allowed two runs or less in four of his outings this year, and has a 2.12 ERA over his four wins and one no decision this year.
Looper earned a win on Wednesday against Cincinnati, as he gave up just two runs on seven hits while striking out four over six innings.
In 18 games versus the Rockies, Looper is 1-2 with a save and 5.64 ERA. He has made one start against them, getting a loss at Coors Field on May 29 of last season after giving up six runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Colorado's Yorvit Torrealba hit a fourth-inning grand slam off of Looper in that one, after the righty walked the bases loaded.
The Cardinals took two of three from the Rockies when these clubs met from April 1-3. St. Louis is 14-6 versus Colorado since the start of the 2006 season.
