(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins try to extend their winning streak to six games this evening when they open a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
Minnesota was impressive in taking all three games with the Detroit Tigers over the weekend, as the Twins moved into sole possession of first place in the AL Central, thanks in part to the White Sox four-game sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Twins completed their sweep on Sunday, as Joe Mauer went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored to lead Minnesota to a 7-6 victory. Nick Punto finished 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Twins, who have matched their longest winning streak from all of last season.
Boof Bonser started for Minnesota, but was roughed up for six runs -- five earned -- on eight hits in six frames and did not factor in the decision. Matt Guerrier (2-1) got the win as he gave up just one hit in two innings of work. Joe Nathan earned his 11th save of the year by yielding just one hit in the ninth.
Hoping to give the Twins their longest run since an eight-game tear from July 14-21, 2006 will be 26-year-old righty Nick Blackburn, who defeated Chicago in his last trip to the hill. Blackburn surrendered three runs and eight hits over seven innings of that one, as he ran his record to 2-1 to go along with a 3.52 ERA.
Blackburn is 1-0 in his young career against the Sox with a 3.21 ERA in three games (two starts).
Chicago, meanwhile, struggled offensively in Toronto, as it managed just five runs in the series and was blanked 1-0 in Monday's finale at Rogers Centre.
The loss spoiled a brilliant outing for Javier Vazquez (3-3), who took the loss despite allowing one run on eight hits in 7 2/3 frames, striking out nine. Juan Uribe had two of the four hits for the White Sox, who have dropped six in a row.
Chicago's offense has failed to reach double digits in hits in 10 consecutive games.
Heading to the hill this evening for Chicago will be righty Gavin Floyd, who is 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA. Floyd was tagged with his first loss of the season last Tuesday against the Twins, as he allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.
Floyd is 0-3 lifetime against the Twins with a 6.75 ERA in three starts.
On the injury front, Chicago could be without Joe Crede this evening. The third baseman, who leads the team with seven home runs, missed Monday's contest with a migraine and is questionable for tonight's contest.
Minnesota took three of four from the White Sox earlier in the year after these teams split their 18 matchups a year ago. The Twins were just 4-5 in Chicago last season.
