Philadelphia Phillies (18-14) at Arizona Diamondbacks (21-10), 9:40 p.m.

(Sports Network) - Youth meets experience tonight in Arizona, as the Diamondbacks' Max Scherzer is set to make his first major-league start and will do so against the Philadelphia Phillies and 45-year-old Jamie Moyer in the opener of a four-game set from Chase Field.

Scherzer, Arizona's first-round pick in 2006, made his big league debut on Tuesday and was outstanding in relief. The right-hander pitched a perfect 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven batters and retiring all 13 hitters he faced. It was the longest debut in modern major league history by a pitcher who retired every batter he faced, while Scherzer's seven strikeouts were just one short of the modern record by a relief pitcher making his debut.

Scherzer, who pitched in relief of Edgar Gonzalez and now replaces him in the rotation, had 38 strikeouts through four starts with Triple-A Tucson prior to his callup.

Scherzer will be opposite Moyer, who is 1-2 with a 4.50 earned run average this season after taking a loss versus San Diego his last time out. The left- hander allowed four runs on a pair of long balls and nine hits total in just 5 1/3 innings of a 4-2 setback on Wednesday.

Moyer, who made his MLB debut in 1986, is 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA in three career starts versus Arizona. That loss came the most recent time he faced the Diamondbacks, as he was tagged for four runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings on May 30 of last season. Moyer was hurt by the long ball, as Erick Byrnes homered off of him twice and Mark Reynolds also went deep.

The Phillies enter this set on a winning note after taking two of three versus the Giants. Philadelphia plated the winning run in the ninth inning in Sunday's 6-5 triumph over San Francisco, as the Giants' Eugenio Velez couldn't handle Geoff Jenkins' grounder to allow Ryan Howard to score.

Pat Burrell finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs batted in, and two walks for the Phillies, who have won three of four and gave manager Charlie Manuel his 500th career victory. Carlos Ruiz added a solo homer and Shane Victorino went 2-for-5 with a double

Philadelphia's Cole Hamels allowed four runs on seven hits over a six-inning start, while Brad Lidge (1-0) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless ninth. Lidge has not allowed an earned run in 15 innings this season.

Arizona plays the last series of its current 10-game homestand and is 3-3 on the residency so far, after losing two of three to the New York Mets. Unlike the Phils, the Diamondbacks lost on a ninth-inning miscue of their own, as Conor Jackson's throwing error helped the Mets plate three runs in the final frame and hand Arizona a 5-2 setback.

Reynolds and Chris Snyder each collected two hits and knocked in a run for Arizona. Chad Qualls (0-2) was charged with the loss and surrendered three hits and three runs -- one earned -- in the fateful ninth inning.

Dan Haren turned in a solid start for Arizona, giving up two runs on just three hits while fanning seven in six innings.

The Diamondbacks still lead the NL West by four games over the charging Dodgers.

Arizona dominated Philadelphia last year, winning five of six meetings including the last three clashes.
