(Sports Network) - Two of the best young pitchers in the National League square off this afternoon when San Francisco's Tim Lincecum opposes Philadelphia's Cole Hamels in the rubber match of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.
Lincecum has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball this season, going 4-1 with a sparkling 1.73 earned run average. He has also struck out 40 batters over 36 1/3 innings. Lincecum, though, suffered his first loss of the season on Tuesday against Colorado, which reached him for three runs and eight hits in seven innings.
The 23-year-old right-hander has faced the Phillies twice without recording a decision, but has been hammered for 11 runs and 12 hits in 11 innings of those outings.
Hamels, meanwhile, seems to have gotten back on track following two straight losses, as he picked up the win against the San Diego Padres with an impressive effort his last time out. Hamels gave up two runs and five hits over 7 1/3 innings to run his record to 3-3 on the season, while lowering his ERA to 2.70.
The 24-year-old left-hander had surrendered nine runs in losing his two previous starts to the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers.
Hamels is 2-0 lifetime against the Giants with a 2.81 ERA in two starts.
In the second game of this set on Saturday, Bengie Molina went 3-for-5 and knocked in the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning as San Francisco eked out a 3-2 win.
The teams have traded extra innings wins in the first two games of the series, as Pat Burrell's two-run homer in the 10th gave the Phillies a 6-5 win on Friday.
Randy Winn went 2-for-5 with a run batted in for the Giants, while Fred Lewis belted a solo home run and scored twice. Jack Taschner (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, while Brian Wilson earned his 10th save.
Matt Cain threw seven-plus sparkling innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out eight, but did not factor in the decision.
Chase Utley delivered two of Philadelphia's three hits, including a solo homer, while Geoff Jenkins also connected with a solo shot. Rudy Seanez (2-2) took the loss after allowing a run on four hits in the 10th. Brett Myers had a solid outing, holding the Giants to two runs on six hits in seven frames and racking up 10 strikeouts.
San Francisco and Philadelphia split eight matchups in 2007, but the Phillies are 15-7 over the past 22 meetings in this series. Philly is also 9-3 in the City of Brotherly Love during that span.
