(Sports Network) - Greg Maddux takes another shot at win No. 350 this afternoon when the San Diego Padres conclude their three-game series with the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium.
Maddux, who is 0-2 over his last three starts, remained stuck at 349 victories on Tuesday in Philadelphia, as he allowed three runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings to the Phillies, dropping him to 2-2 on the year, while raising his earned run average to 3.76.
With a win tonight, though, Maddux would become only the ninth pitcher in major league history with 350 for his career. It would also pull him within four of Roger Clemens for eighth place on the all-time wins list.
Maddux has faced the Marlins 40 times over the course of his brilliant career, posting a 19-13 mark agianst them with a 2.88 ERA.
Florida will counter with young left-hander Andrew Miller, who is 1-2 with a 9.12 ERA. The 22-year-old hurler, who has never faced the Padres, received a no-decision on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but was hammered for six runs and nine hits in just three innings of his team's 7-6 loss.
In the second game of this set on Saturday, Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored to lead San Diego to a 7-2 win. Tadahito Iguchi finished 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Padres, who put the brakes on a two-game skid.
San Diego hasn't won back-to-back games since April 13-15 and have not won a series since taking two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers from April 11-13.
Jake Peavy (4-1) got the win after he went 5 2/3 innings and gave up just two runs on five hits, while striking out eight.
Jeremy Hermida went 3-for-4 and scored a run , while Mike Jacobs hit a two-run home run for Florida, which has dropped four of its last five games.
Ricky Nolasco (1-3) was dealt the loss after he was touched for six runs on 10 hits in just 4 2/3 frames.
The Padres went 4-3 against the Marlins last season, with a 2-1 mark as the guest. They are 12-9 in the last 21 matchups in this series.
