(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Dodgers take aim at their seventh straight win this evening, when they open a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Los Angeles extended its streak on Thursday, as Matt Kemp singled home the go- ahead run in the ninth inning and scored an insurance run on a heads-up baserunning play to help the Dodgers to a 5-3 victory over the Florida Marlins and a sweep of the three-game series at Dolphin Stadium.
Juan Pierre was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in and the Los Angeles bullpen tossed two scoreless innings to seal the win.
Joe Beimel (3-0) picked up his second win of the series in relief and Takashi Saito closed the door in the ninth for his fourth save of the season. Hideki Kuroda tossed an effective seven innings for the Dodgers, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The win streak is Los Angeles' longest since the Dodgers won the final seven games to end the 2006 season.
Hoping to keep LA in the win column this evening will be right-hander Brad Penny, who has won his last three starts. Penny picked up the victory on Saturday against the Rockies, as he allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings to run his record to 4-2 to go along with a 2.89 ERA.
Penny has owned the Rockies over the course of his career, going a remarkable 13-2 with a 2.97 ERA in 22 starts against them. He is 8-0 in his last 12 starts against the Rockies and hasn't lost in Colorado in nearly six years.
Colorado, meanwhile, got some bad news on Thursday, when it learned it will have to play without shortstop Troy Tulowitzki for at least the next six weeks because of a torn tendon in his quadriceps.
Tulowitzki, last year's runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year, had struggled in the early going, batting a mere .152 with a home run and 11 RBI. Last year he set an NL rookie record for home runs by a shortstop with 24 while hitting .291 with 99 RBI.
The defending NL champion Rockies will be happy to turn the page on the first month of the season after going just 11-17 in April with losses in nine of their last 11 contests. Colorado enters action on Friday just a half-game ahead of the cellar-dwelling San Diego Padres in the NL West.
Los Angeles swept a three-game set from the Rockies last weekend. However, Colorado won 12 of the 18 matchups between the teams a year ago, including wins in the final seven games.
