Tampa Bay Rays (1-1) at New York Yankees (2-1), 7:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees try to make it two straight wins this evening, when they open a four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium.

New York won the rubber match of its three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, as Bobby Abreu singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to rally the Yankees to a 3-2 victory.

Abreu had two of the six hits for the Yankees, who came back from a 2-0 deficit and won with spectacular relief from the tandem of Billy Traber, Brian Bruney, Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera. The foursome combined to hold the Blue Jays scoreless over the final three frames.

David Eckstein went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Blue Jays, who left the potential tying run stranded at third base in the ninth.

Toronto's Dustin McGowan gave up four hits and two runs over six innings, while Phil Hughes had a similar line in his start for New York.

New York will hand the ball tonight to 22-year-old right-hander Ian Kennedy, who will be making the fourth start of his major league career. Kennedy's big- league debut came against the Rays last season, and he allowed one earned run and five hits over seven innings to nail down the win. That would be his only victory last season, although Kennedy pitched to a marvelous 1.89 ERA in his three starts.

The Rays counter with youngster Andy Sonnanstine, who reached the majors and made 22 starts for Tampa Bay last season. He finished 6-10 with a 5.85 ERA in 130 2/3 innings.

A 13th-round pick in the 2004 draft, Sonnanstine made two starts against the Yankees and was 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA.

Overall, Sonnanstine allowed 151 hits and struck out 97 last year, while walking 26. Opponents hit .293 off him, including 18 home runs.

Tampa Bay had the finale of its three-game season-opening set with the Baltimore Orioles rained out on Thursday. The Rays have split their first two contests, winning Monday's opener before falling on Wednesday.

Tonight's game will be the first regular-season meeting between the Yanks and Rays since their little dust-up this spring, which resulted in suspensions for New York's Melky Cabrera and Shelley Duncan. Both players have appealed those penalties.

New York won 10 of their 18 matchups with the Rays a year ago and were 5-4 against them in the Bronx. The Yanks are 23-13 over the past two seasons against Tampa, losing just six of their 18 games at home to the Rays over that time.
