(Sports Network) - Young right-hander Kyle Kendrick will attempt to follow-up on a surprisingly effective rookie season tonight when the Philadelphia Phillies open a three-game series with the host Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
Kendrick, a seventh-round draft choice in 2003, reached the majors last season and went 10-4 in 20 starts with a 6.00 earned run average in 121 innings for the National League's East Division champions.
He faced the Reds once and won, allowing six hits and four runs in six innings while striking out three and walking three.
Cincinnati goes with 31-year-old veteran Josh Fogg, who'll make his first start with the team after coming over in the offseason from Colorado.
A 6-foot, 205-pounder, Fogg made 30 starts with the NL champion Rockies in 2007, going 10-9 with a 4.94 ERA in 165 2/3 innings. He also reached double- digit wins with Colorado in 2006, going 11-9 with a 5.49 ERA.
Overall, the University of Florida product has made 197 big-league appearances, including 179 starts, and is 60-60 with a 4.90 ERA and an opposition batting average of .286.
He is 1-1 against the Phillies in four career starts, allowing 14 earned runs in 22 innings.
On Thursday in Philadelphia, Jayson Werth drew a four-pitch, bases- loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Phillies beat the Washington Nationals, 8-7, to salvage the finale of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.
Jimmy Rollins kicked things off with a single, and after Shane Victorino laid down a bunt, Rollins went all the way to third, diving in safely in a race to the bag.
Jesus Colome then intentionally walked both Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, but couldn't find the strike zone against Werth. The final pitch hit the catcher's glove and skipped toward the backstop as Rollins trotted home with the winning run.
The rally made a winner out of reliever Clay Condrey (1-0), who hurled a perfect tenth. The Phils bullpen overcame a poor outing by Jamie Moyer, who allowed six runs -- just three earned -- and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Moyer, who was making the 552nd start of his big league career, also walked a batter and struck out three.
Chris Coste had two hits -- including a solo homer -- and two runs scored in the win for the Phillies.
In Cincinnati, Johnny Cueto struck out 10 batters and allowed just one hit over seven innings in his major league debut, as the Reds held on for a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Brandon Phillips doubled in a run and scored another, while Jeff Keppinger belted a solo homer for the Reds, who pulled out a 6-5 victory on a three-run, ninth-inning homer by Edwin Encarnacion on Wednesday after dropping a 4-2 decision in the season-opener on Monday.
Cueto (1-0), a non-roster invitee in spring training, was brilliant with a fastball that reached 96 miles per hour and a hard slider. The 22-year-old right-hander earned a roster spot despite a 5.09 earned run average in 17 2/3 innings in Florida, but on Thursday, the organization's top minor league pitcher the last two years was perfect through five innings before Justin Upton's homer leading off the sixth.
Francisco Cordero, signed as a free agent in November, worked a perfect ninth for his first save.
Philly won four of six from the Reds last season and is 12-7 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign.
