(Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals try to continue their hot start to the season this evening, when they play the opener of a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome.
After sweeping the Detroit Tigers, the Royals are 3-0 for the first time since opening the 2003 campaign with nine straight wins en route to an 83-79 finish -- the last time the team finished above .500.
Kansas City, which is the only unbeaten team left in the league, completed the sweep on Thursday, as Zack Greinke hurled seven solid innings and Alex Gordon and Mark Teahen both homered to lead the Royals to a 4-1 win.
Greinke (1-0) allowed just one run on six hits for the Royals, who held the high-powered Detroit offense to just five runs in the season-opening three- game set. Kansas City pitched to an impressive 1.55 earned run average in the series, while striking out 24 Tigers in 29 innings.
Journeyman left-hander John Bale will try to keep the Royals rolling this evening, as he makes his first start since the 2003 season while with the Cincinnati Reds. Bale appeared in 26 games for the Royals last season as a reliever and was 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA.
Bale has faced the Twins four times, but has yet to record a decision against them while pitching to a 4.50 ERA.
Minnesota, meanwhile, comes into this series reeling after losing the final three games of their four-game set with the Los Angles Angels of Anaheim, including a 5-4 setback on Thursday.
Joe Mauer finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Twins, while Jason Kubel added a solo homer. Justin Morneau also had an RBI for Minnesota, but is 0-for-12 on the season.
Twins starter Kevin Slowey (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings before exiting with a right biceps strain. Brian Bass followed and gave up a pair of runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Heading to the hill tonight for the Twins will be right-hander Scott Baker, who won all three of his starts against the Royals last season. Baker also carried a perfect game into the ninth inning against KC on August 31, but walked the leadoff hitter before giving up a one-out single in the Twins 5-0 victory.
Baker ended the season 9-9 with a 4.26 ERA.
Minnesota split its 18 matchups with the Royals last season and is 34-22 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign.
