(Sports Network) - Dominican right-hander Johnny Cueto makes his major-league debut today as the Cincinnati Reds host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game season-opening series at Great American Ball Park.
Cueto, who turned 22 in February, is a 5-foot-10, 183-pound right-hander from the baseball factory of San Pedro de Macoris who prompted comparisons to established major-league star Pedro Martinez during the spring, during which he beat out several veteran contenders for a spot in the Reds' starting rotation.
The rest of Cincinnati's starting staff is filled out by holdovers Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo, fellow youngster Edinson Volquez and first-year Red Josh Fogg.
Cueto will be opposed by 32-year-old lefty Doug Davis, who's continuing to pitch for the Diamondbacks despite a recent diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
Davis was 13-12 for Arizona last season, logging 192 2/3 innings with a 4.25 earned run average. He's been successful against the Reds throughout his career, going 6-2 in 14 lifetime starts with two complete games and a 3.40 ERA in 92 2/3 innings.
In 229 career major-league appearances, including 209 starts, Davis is 75-75 with a 4.34 ERA.
Cincinnati evened this set on Wednesday, with Edwin Encarnacion belting a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Reds came back to nip the Diamondbacks, 6-5.
With the Reds trailing 5-3, Brandon Phillips and Adam Dunn led off the inning with singles off Arizona closer Brandon Lyon (0-1). Encarnacion then attempted to move the runners with a bunt, but after the signal was pulled off with two strikes, he ripped a 2-2 fastball into the left-center field stands to give the Reds their first win under new manager Dusty Baker.
Encarnacion salvaged a game where he had struck out twice and committed his second error in as many contests. Phillips was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, while Corey Patterson added a solo shot. Jeff Keppinger went 3-for-3 and scored a run as the Reds avenged Monday's season-opening 4-2 loss to Arizona.
Arroyo started and pitched five shaky innings, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on four hits while striking out five. Jeremy Affeldt picked up his first win as a Red after pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.
The loss spoiled a solid start from Dan Haren, who allowed three runs on four hits over six innings in his Diamondbacks debut. Haren, who was acquired in a trade from Oakland this offseason, also doubled and drove in a run.
Stephen Drew homered for Arizona, while Chris Young was 1-for-2 with three walks, a stolen base and two runs scored. First baseman Conor Jackson left the game in the fifth inning due to a stomach illness and is not expected to be in the lineup this afternoon.
The Reds swept a three-game series from Arizona in Cincinnati last July and won four of the six overall encounters between these teams in 2007. The Diamondbacks have gone 3-7 over their 10 most recent games at Great American Ball Park.
