(Sports Network) - Mike Mussina hopes to bounce back from his worst season in the majors when the New York Yankees resume their three-game season-opening series with the Toronto Blue Jays this evening at Yankee Stadium.
The 39-year-old right-hander battled hamstring and foot injuries last season and went just 11-10 while pitching to a career-worst 5.15 earned run average in 28 games (27 starts).
Mussina, who is fourth among active pitchers with 250 victories, may have hit rock bottom in August, when three straight horrendous outings dropped him from the rotation. However, he returned as a starter in September and ended the year by winning his last three decisions.
Mussina has been marvelous over the course of his career against the Blue Jays, having gone 23-11 with a 3.32 ERA in 41 starts versus Toronto. His 23 wins are one shy of Roger Clemens' 24 victories against the Jays, which is the most by any pitcher against the franchise.
The Yankees set a franchise record on Tuesday by winning their 11th straight home opener, as Chien-Ming Wang hurled seven solid innings and Melky Cabrera homered to New York to a 3-2 win.
Wang (1-0) allowed just six hits and two runs for the Yankees, who gave new manager Joe Girardi a win in his New York managerial debut.
Joba Chamberlain struck out two batters in the eighth and Mariano Rivera, who didn't record his first save until April 28 of last season, pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save. Rivera then gave his new manager the ball after recording the third out.
Alex Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored the game-winning run for New York, while Bobby Abreu was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Shannon Stewart and Marco Scutaro drove in a run apiece for the Blue Jays, who are coming off an 83-79 season. Toronto ace Roy Halladay (0-1) pitched well, surrendering three runs on seven hits in seven innings en route to the hard- luck loss.
Alex Rios also had a hit in the loss, extending his hitting streak to 21 games against the Yankees.
Toronto will give the ball tonight to oft-injured righty A.J. Burnett, who made just 25 starts last season thanks to two stints on the disabled list and was 10-8 with a 3.75 ERA and a team-high 176 strikeouts.
Burnett, who has been on the DL 10 times in nine seasons, finished strong and was 5-2 with a 3.01 ERA over his final 10 starts. He held opponents to a .202 batting average over that span.
The 31-year-old hurler has faced the Yankees six times and is 3-2 with a 3.20 ERA against them.
New York won 11 of their 19 matchups with the Jays last season and are 33-22 against Toronto since the start of the 2005 campaign.
