(Sports Network) - Pedro Martinez gets to prove he is fully healthy this evening when the New York Mets continue their three-game season-opening series with the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium.
Martinez, who has been slowed by a myriad of injuries over the past two years, missed most of last season recovering from reconstructive shoulder surgery, but returned in September and went 3-1 down the stretch for the Mets with a 2.57 earned run average in five starts.
The 36-year-old right-hander, who can become a free agent at season's end, has been sensational in Florida over the course of his brilliant career, going 5-2 there with a sparkling 1.89 ERA in 10 games. For his career, the three-time Cy Young winner is 6-6 against the Marlins with a 2.85 ERA in 21 games, 17 of which have been starts.
New York was victorious in Johan Santana's debut on Monday, as he gave up just two runs to help the Mets to a 7-2 win. David Wright hit a three-run double in the fourth inning while Jose Reyes finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in for the Mets, who won for the 11th time in their last 12 tries in Miami.
Santana (1-0), who New York acquired in an off-season trade with Minnesota for four young prospects, was charged with just the two runs along with three hits and two walks while striking out eight in seven innings of work.
Josh Willingham hit a two-run home run, while Mark Hendrickson (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in five innings of work for the Marlins, who finished last season with an NL East-worst 71-91 record.
Florida will give the ball to right-hander Rick VandenHurk, who was 4-6 last season in his rookie campaign with a 6.83 ERA in 18 games (17 starts). He faced the Mets twice a year ago and was 0-1, while surrendering 12 runs and 10 hits in nine innings.
Although the Mets had their struggles against the Marlins late last season, they won eight times in nine games versus Florida at Dolphin Stadium in 2007. Since the start of the 2005 campaign, New York has gone 19-9 in South Beach.
