LA Angels of Anaheim (0-0) at Minnesota Twins (0-0), 7:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - Torii Hunter gets an immediate shot at his former club tonight, when the outfielder leads the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the first of a season-opening four-game series against the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome.

Hunter was signed by the Angels to a five-year contract in the offseason after winning seven Gold Glove awards with the Twins. Hunter, who had spent his entire 11-year career with Minnesota, hit .297 with 94 runs scored, 45 doubles, one triple, 28 home runs and 107 RBI in 160 games last year. The veteran center fielder set career highs in RBI and games played last season, while hitting safely in a career-best 23 straight games.

The 32-year-old Hunter will try to lead the Angels to AL West supremacy for the second straight year after the ballclub went 94-68 a year ago. The Angels have won the division in three of the last four years, while manager Mike Scioscia has guided the team to the postseason four times in his eight years as skipper.

Scioscia has the offense to do the job with the likes of MVP candidate Vladimir Guerrero, Garret Anderson and Gary Matthews Jr.

Taking the mound on Opening Day for the Halos will be Jered Weaver, who went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 28 games in 2007. The young right-hander had a promising spring and is taking over for starter John Lackey, who is expected to miss at least the first month of the season with a triceps problem.

Weaver is 2-0 with a 2.11 earned run average in three career starts against Minnesota, all of which came during the 2007 campaign.

The Twins missed the playoffs last year after a 79-83 mark and third-place finish in the competitive AL Central Division. The offseason didn't get any better, as Minnesota dealt away ace pitcher Johan Santana to the New York Mets and learned that hurler Francisco Liriano will have to make some minor league starts before joining the rotation as he continues his recovery from elbow surgery. Liriano did not pitch in 2007.

Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire will hand the ball to newcomer Livan Hernandez on Monday. Hernandez has never pitched in the American League during his 10-year career and went 11-11 with a 4.93 earned run average over 33 starts with Arizona last year. The righty is 0-0 with a 3.55 ERA in two career appearances against the Angels.

The Angels went 6-3 against Minnesota last season and has won 16 of the last 25 matchups in the series.
