(Sports Network) - Ace right-hander Roy Oswalt again looks for his first win
since May 12 when the Houston Astros host the St. Louis Cardinals in the
opener of a three-game series tonight at Minute Maid Park.
Oswalt, a 15-game winner last season after earning 20 W's in 2005, opened
this season at 6-2 but has since gone 0-2 with a no-decision in his last
three starts. His most recent outing, on May 27 at Arizona, ended in an 8-4
loss after he allowed 10 hits and five earned runs in six innings.
He earned his first win of 2007 against the Cardinals, scattering five hits
over nine innings in a 5-1 victory on April 7 in Houston. Lifetime against
St. Louis, he is 8-5 with a 3.17 earned run average in 20 appearances - 19
starts.
Youngster Adam Wainwright goes for the Cardinals after having alternated
wins and losses in his last four starts.
The 25-year-old Georgian was a tough-luck loser last time out, allowing
seven hits and two runs in seven innings while dropping a 7-2 decision to
Washington.
Previously, he'd allowed nine hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings while
downing Pittsburgh, 9-4.
He defeated the Astros, 3-2, on May 4 in St. Louis, allowing seven hits and
two runs in six innings. Lifetime against Houston, the converted reliever is
2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in eight appearances.
On Thursday in Colorado, Juan Encarnacion laced a two-out, three-run double
in a four-run sixth inning for the Cardinals, who strung back-to- back wins
together on the road for the first time in nearly two months with a 7-3
victory over the Rockies at Coors Field.
Gary Bennett finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for St. Louis, while Scott Rolen
ended 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice.
Brad Thompson (4-1), who has won three of his last four starts, allowed two
runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts over a career-high 7
1/3 innings for the Cards.
In Houston, Lance Berkman belted a three-run homer and Woody Williams struck
out a season-high nine batters as the Astros snapped a 10-game losing streak
with a 10-2 rout of the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a three-game set at
Minute Maid Park.
Williams (2-7) yielded two runs and seven hits with two walks in five
innings for the Astros, who avoided matching the longest losing streak in
franchise history.
Mark Loretta went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Craig Biggio finished
3- for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI for Houston, which matched a
season-high with 16 hits.
St. Louis has won four of six from the Astros this season, including two of
three at Minute Maid Park.
