San Diego Padres (31-22) at Washington Nationals (22-32), 7:05 p.m.
(Sports Network) - Padres ace Jake Peavy will take on the only team that has
beat him this season when San Diego opens a three-game series tonight against
the Washington Nationals at RFK Stadium.
Peavy is 7-1 in 11 starts this season and currently leads the majors with a
1.47 earned run average. Peavy, who has lasted at least six innings in each of
the past seven starts, has won his last four decisions and is unbeaten over
the previous five trips to the mound with a microscopic 0.79 ERA.
When he took the hill on April 30 against Washington at Petco Park, Peavy was
reached for three runs and six hits over seven innings despite fanning 10
batters and issuing just two walks in a 3-2 setback. Peavy owns a 2-4 mark
with a 4.22 ERA in eight career starts against the Nationals.
In his last outing on May 27 against Milwaukee, the right-hander earned the
win with seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball with eight K's and one walk.
Peavy is currently fourth in the majors with 85 strikeouts and can become the
first eight-game winner in the National League with a victory tonight. He is
also an impressive 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA in four road starts this season.
San Diego has won two straight, five of six and 10 of its last 13 games,
including Thursday's 4-2 victory in 11 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates
at PNC Park. Mike Cameron clubbed the go-ahead home run in the 11th inning
after tying it with an RBI double in the ninth. Cameron, whose homer was the
200th of his career, finished with three hits.
The Padres are now in a three-way tie for first place in the National League
West division with Los Angeles and Arizona.
Starter Greg Maddux lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs -- one earned --
on nine hits. Relief pitcher Cla Meredith earned the win with a scoreless 10th
and closer Trevor Hoffman took the mound in the 11th for his 16th save in 18
chances this season.
Matt Chico gets the nod tonight for Washington and is 3-4 with a 5.13 earned
run average in 11 starts this season.
Chico is unbeaten in his last four starts (1-0) after losing back-to-back
outings, and did not factor in the decision his last time out on May 27
against St. Louis. He pitched four shutout innings and gave up three hits
during a 7-2 Washington victory. In fact, the Nats have won each of Chico's
last four trips to the bump.
The left-hander took on San Diego on May 2 this season for the first time in
his career and was handed the loss. He yielded five runs and four hits in a
season-low 3 2/3 innings of a 7-3 setback.
Washington ended a two-game losing streak with Thursday's 11-4 bashing of the
Dodgers at RFK Stadium and won for the sixth time in nine games. Ryan
Zimmerman finished with two hits, including a two-run homer, four RBI and
three runs scored as the Nationals improved to 1-2 on their nine-game
homestand.
Ryan Church also hit a two-run homer, while Austin Kearns and Brian Schneider
each had two RBI for the Nationals, who are still last in the NL East
standings. Starter Micah Bowie won his second straight start after he was
charged with three runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
San Diego took two of three games against Washington from April 30 - May 2 at
Petco Park and has won six straight at RFK Stadium. The Padres own an 18-4
mark over the previous 22 matchups with the Montreal/Washington franchise.
