Kansas City Royals (19-35) at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (22-29), 7:10 p.m.
(Sports Network) - Southpaw Scott Kazmir makes his seventh attempt at his
first home victory of 2007 tonight when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays host the
Kansas City Royals to open a four-game series at Tropicana Field.
Kazmir, a 23-year-old Texan, is 0-1 with a 3.31 earned run average in six
starts at home this season, the most recent coming on May 22. In that game,
he allowed four hits and two runs in five innings while taking a no-decision
in the Rays' 5-2 loss to Seattle.
On May 27 in Chicago, Kazmir allowed eight hits and four runs in seven
innings in an 11-5 defeat of the White Sox.
Lifetime against the Royals, he is 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA in three starts.
Kansas City's Brian Bannister faces Tampa Bay for the first time.
Bannister came over from the New York Mets in the offseason after going 2-1
with a 4.26 ERA in eight appearances last season.
The Royals are 1-5 in his six starts in 2007, including a 9-1 loss to
Seattle on May 26 in which Bannister allowed eight hits and four runs in
seven innings.
Overall, he's surrendered 35 hits and 17 earned runs in 33 2/3 innings.
On Wednesday in Tampa Bay, James Shields tossed a seven-hitter and Brendan
Harris' homer in the sixth put the Devil Rays ahead for good as they downed
the Detroit Tigers, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set at
Tropicana Field.
Shields (4-0) allowed three runs with a walk and four strikeouts in his 11th
start and second complete game of his career.
Elijah Dukes also homered for the Rays, who have won three of four. Akinori
Iwamura finished 3-for-4 and scored a run, while B.J. Upton ended 2-for-4
with an RBI and scored a run in the win.
In Kansas City, Erik Bedard threw eight shutout innings and Nick Markakis
belted a two-run homer in Baltimore's 3-0 win over the Royals, as the
Orioles swept the three-game series and sent the hosts to their season-high
seventh straight defeat.
Gil Meche (3-4) was the hard-luck loser after yielding just four hits and a
run over 7 1/3 innings. He lost his third straight start.
Tampa took five of six from the Royals last season and is 16-5 against them
since the start of the 2004 campaign. Kansas City has also struggled in St.
Petersburg, where they have won just twice in their last 13 visits, losing its
last seven games played there.
