(Sports Network) - Fausto Carmona tries to win his seventh straight decision
this evening when the Cleveland Indians continue their four-game series with
the Detroit Tigers at Jacobs Field.
Carmona defeated the Tigers in his last trip to the hill on Sunday, as he
allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings to improve to 6-1 on the
year to go along with a 2.89 earned run average.
The 23-year-old right-hander is 2-1 lifetime against the Tigers with a 3.45
ERA in five games, two of which have been starts.
Detroit will counter with left-hander Mike Maroth, who has dropped his last
two starts and is 3-2 on the year with a 5.04 ERA. Maroth was on the losing
end to Carmona and the Tigers on Sunday, as he surrendered five runs and six
hits in eight innings.
Maroth has faced the Indians 13 times and is 8-4 against them with a 3.00 ERA.
Cleveland widened its gap in the AL Central in the opener of this set on
Thursday, as Travis Hafner homered and drove in four runs in the Indians'
11-5 victory.
Cleveland swept the Tigers last weekend at Comerica Park and now owns a 3 1/2-
game lead over the Tigers in the division. The Indians also improved their
major-league leading home record to 18-4.
Victor Martinez homered for the Indians, who have won six of eight overall.
Grady Sizemore finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice, while Casey
Blake ended 2-for-5 with two runs scored in the rout. C.C. Sabathia (8-1)
allowed five runs on 10 hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 7 1/3
innings.
Craig Monroe homered for the Tigers, who lost their second straight and have
dropped six of seven overall. Marcus Thames went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the
loss. Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Justin Verlander (5-2) gave up seven runs
on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts over five-plus frames for
Detroit.
Detroit won 13 of its 16 meetings with the Indians a year ago, including six
of nine at Jacobs Field.
