Arizona Diamondbacks (32-23) at New York Mets (34-18), 7:10 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to extend the major
league's longest active winning streak this evening, when they begin a three-
game series with the NL East-leading New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
The Diamondbacks swept the Astros in four games last weekend and then took all
three contests against the Phillies earlier this week to compile a season-high
seven-game winning streak.
Arizona twice had to fight off comeback attempts by the Phillies, and the
series finale on Wednesday was one of those games. The Diamondbacks led 4-0
going into the ninth frame, but Brandon Lyon was charged with three runs and
was lifted for Jose Valverde.
Lyon allowed a two-run triple to Jimmy Rollins and Valverde gave up a run-
scoring single to Pat Burrell that cut the lead to a run.
With pinch-hitter Michael Bourn on second after a steal, Valverde got a pinch-
hitting Ryan Howard to line out into a shift, and Orlando Hudson doubled off
Bourn at second to end the game as Arizona escaped with a 4-3 victory.
Eric Byrnes hit a pair of homers in the win, while Mark Reynolds continued his
stellar play since coming up from Double-A by blasting a two-run homer in the
eighth for Arizona's final two runs.
Randy Johnson (3-2) missed his last scheduled start with forearm tendinitis,
but appeared healthy in throwing an economical 61 pitches in six frames. The
southpaw fanned six, didn't walk a batter, and yielded just a Burrell single.
The 43-year-old Johnson tied Jim Kaat for 29th place on the all-time wins list
with 283 victories.
The Diamondbacks' winning burst has moved them just a few percentage points
behind Los Angeles and San Diego for first place in the NL West.
Coming off an outstanding outing against the Astros on Saturday, Brandon Webb
will toe the rubber for the Diamondbacks tonight. The right-hander allowed
only two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-4
win over Houston. The victory pushed Webb's record to 4-3 on the season with a
3.74 earned run average.
Webb faced the Mets on May 5 and was handed a loss after yielding six runs --
five earned -- on six hits in six innings. The setback dropped Webb to 1-6 in
eight lifetime starts against the Mets, despite having recorded a 2.59 ERA in
those games.
John Maine takes the hill for the Mets tonight in search of his second
straight win. After going through a three-start winless stretch that produced
two losses, the right-hander rebounded on Saturday versus the Marlins.
On that day, Maine allowed just two runs on four hits and four walks with a
career-high tying eight strikeouts to improve to 6-2 with a 2.79 earned run
average on the year.
The 26-year-old made the first start of his career against Arizona on May 4
and threw six innings of one-run ball to get the win.
New York will continue its nine-game homestand tonight and opened the
residency by taking two of three against the New York Giants. In the series
finale on Thursday, Orlando Hernandez gave up just two hits over seven innings
in New York's 4-2 victory.
Hernandez (3-1) yielded two runs on the way to posting his first win since
April 19. After yielding hits to the first two batters of the game, he retired
20 of the final 21 batters he faced, issuing one walk in that span.
Billy Wagner pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 13th save.
Jose Reyes went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Mets, who have
won five of six and lead the Braves by 4 1/2 games for first place in the NL
East. Endy Chavez had two hits and knocked in a run, as did David Wright.
Carlos Beltran drove in a run with a single before leaving the game with a
bruised right knee. The center fielder was forced out of the game after
colliding with the Giants' Rich Aurilia and is expected to get an MRI on
Friday.
The Mets won three of four against the Diamondbacks in Arizona in early May,
and have won 15 of the last 18 meetings in the series.
